Easter, Day 42

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed: *
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him *
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm, *
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, *
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things, *
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel, *
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers, *
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Luke 1:46-55

Easter, Day 41

Ascend with Christ …

Grant, we pray, Almighty God, that as we believe your only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into heaven, so we may also in heart and mind there ascend, and with him continually dwell; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Easter, Day 40 Ascension Day

Give us faith to perceive …

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Easter, Day 39

Grant us the strength of thy Holy Spirit

Almighty God and Father, grant unto us, because we have to go through much strife on this earth, the strength of thy Holy Spirit, in order that we may courageously go through the fire, and through the water, and that we may put ourselves so under thy rule that we may go to meet death in full confidence of thy assistance and without fear.

Grant us also that we may hear all hatred and enmity of mankind, until we have gained the last victory, and that we may at last come to that blessed rest which thy only begotten Son has acquired for us through his blood. Amen.

Prayer of John Calvin (remembered in the Episcopal Church on May 28th) in Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life, (Baker, 2004) p. 13

Easter, Day 38

Grant us grace to trust your Word

God of forgiveness, grant us grace to trust in your Word and to resist sin for the true freedom and joy that comes from following your Son. Help us model our lives after the relationship of love around us, celebrating wholeheartedly the grace that fills the lives of those around us. Amen.

Easter, Day 37

Memorial Day

Jesus, Prince of Peace, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy and especially we remember with gratitude those men and women who have laid down their lives in the service of our country.

Grant—to those whose graves are marked in hallowed grounds and to those whose passing is commemorated in our hearts—your mercy and the light of your presence.

And give, O Lord, to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will.

As you know us and love us, hear our prayer.

Easter, Day 36: A Sunday Blessing

May the blessing of God,
the eternal goodwill of God,
the shalom of God,
the wildness and the warmth of God,
be in us, be among us and between us,
now and always.

Easter, Day 35

O wonder of wonders!

O wonder of wonders! when I think of the union of my soul with you, O God! You make my soul flow out of herself in joyful ecstasy, for nothing but you can content her. A spring of divine love surges over my soul, sweeping her out of herself into you, O God, her original source.

Easter, Day 34

Come Lord! Do not smile

Come Lord! Do not smile and say you are already with us. Millions do not know you and to us who do, what is the difference? What is the point of your presence if our lives do not alter? Change our lives, shatter our complacency. Make your word flesh of our flesh, blood of our blood and our life’s purpose. Take away the quietness of a clear conscience. Press us uncomfortably. For only thus that other peace is made, your peace.

Easter, Day 33

Comfort of the sad

Almighty and everlasting God, the comfort of the sad, and strength of them that suffer; Let the prayers of Thy children who cry out of any tribulation come unto Thee, and unto every soul that is distressed grant Thou mercy, relief, and refreshment; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
